Global Dental Relief--Guatemala
Whether at home or in an underserved country, Dr. Berryhill believes that reaching out to those less fortunate helps define our purpose as human beings. Most recently in July 2010, Dr. Berryhill volunteered in Guatemala with Global Dental Relief, an international organization dedicated to serving children-in-need in impoverished countries.
Hurricane Katrina Relief—New Orleans
In 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012, Dr. Berryhill joined fellow alumni from the University of Santa Clara volunteering with ‘The Saint Bernard Project’ and ‘Catholic Charities’ rebuilding homes in New Orleans. On her first immersion trip, she was joined by her daughter, Elizabeth. “That first trip was heartbreaking. We arrived 16 months after the storm to find much of the city dark and uninhabitable. We spent most of our time gutting homes and removing debris. We were overwhelmed by the extent of the damage.”
2008-2012 were all about rebuilding. “Working with ‘The Saint Bernard Project’, we did whatever we were called upon to do: Installing sheet rock, flooring, taping, mudding, painting, even wiring. We were able to meet and interact with every family whose home we helped rebuild. It became personal. These experiences were both moving and humbling”.
Christina's Smile
In 2010 and 2011, Dr. Berryhill volunteered with 'Christina's Smile', an organization providing free dental services to underprivileged children in the United States.
Remote Area Medical
In April 2011, Dr. Berryhill joined hundreds of health care workers volunteering with Remote Area Medical at the Oakland Coliseum. Annually, RAM provides free medical and dental care to tens of thousands of uninsured and under-served people in the US and abroad.
CDA Cares
Most recently, in 2012, Dr. Berryhill joined over 300 health care professionals volunteering with CDA Cares, the California Dental Association Foundation's free dental clinic. CDA Cares provides dental care statewide in various cities, several times each year. Over information 1650 patients received dental care in the three day event held in Modesto, California. CASA of Fresno and Madera Counties
Outside of the dental world, Dr. Berryhill volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), for foster children in Fresno County. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in inappropriate group or foster homes. Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives.
